Elizabeth Jane Costello, PhD, was recognized as one of five 2019 distinguished Emeriti Faculty Honorees on June 4, 2019 at the Washington Duke Inn. Dr. Costello is Professor Emeritus in the Duke University Department of Psychiatry, Child & Family Mental Health & Developmental Neuroscience, in addition to her Research Scholar appointment with Duke Population Research Institute (DUPRI).
Her research concentrates on childhood and adolescence, including leading The Great Smoky Mountains Study, a longitudinal, population-based community survey of 4,500 children and adolescents living in the Appalachian mountains between 1992 and 2015. The study is part of a collaborative effort between Duke University and the North Carolina State Division of Developmental Disabilities, Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services. Findings from this population provides information for federal and local policy makers and at the same time tests ideas about the development of risk and resilience.
