This workshop presented by Adam Mack offers an overview of the elements of data documentation, from a research project's inception to the dissemination and archiving of data. Effective data management is a key element in the success of almost any social science research project, and maintaining thorough, detailed documentation is a vital part of the data management process. The workshop will examine the types of information that should be documented, the different forms documentation can take, and the varying and different audiences that use data documentation. Topics to be discussed include the creation of project documentation such as codebooks, annotated measures, and data narratives, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of each type of documentation. The importance of documentation at each stage of the research process and the problems that can be encountered when proper documentation does not exist will also be covered.
